The Case
Federal prosecutors charged Samuel Bankman-Fried with fraud and conspiracy offenses arising from FTX and Alameda Research. The government alleged that he directed the use of FTX customer deposits through Alameda, concealed the resulting shortfall, and misled customers, lenders, and investors. The defense argued that he acted in good faith while two legitimate businesses failed during a severe market downturn.
On November 2, 2023, the jury found Bankman-Fried guilty on all seven counts. Judge Lewis A. Kaplan sentenced him to 25 years in prison on March 28, 2024. The Second Circuit affirmed the convictions and sentence on June 12, 2026.
