Marc Troiano

Called by the government on Day 14, FBI Special Agent Marc Troiano testified about a discrete review of Signal data from Gary Wang's laptop and Caroline Ellison's phone extraction. He explained how he checked Government Exhibit 1083, a chart identifying Signal groups involving Samuel Bankman-Fried, their participants, and recorded auto-deletion settings.

Troiano described matching phone numbers across the devices to reconcile participant labels and using the available device records to identify changes in disappearing-message settings. He testified that the chart covered 325 groups from 2020 through 2022, with auto-deletion enabled in 288, and that one record showed Bankman-Fried turning off a one-week setting on November 9, 2022.

Cross-examination established that prosecutors selected the groups and supplied the chart's initial draft. Troiano's role was to verify names, dates, and other information and make factual corrections. He also stated that he did not review message content, lacked independent knowledge of participant identities beyond the device information, was not a case agent, and had no other case involvement.

When the defense sought broader testimony, objections confined the examination to Troiano's limited assignment and the information shown on the chart. A separate question suggesting that prosecutors had directed him to exclude a group was addressed at sidebar; after the parties clarified several reasons for removals and redactions, the question and answer were stricken by agreement, and the jury was instructed to disregard them.
